Windows 7 Fun
OK
The problem
Windows crashes at the login screen.
I then get multicoloured green red boxes on black screen which I cannot
read. The mouse icon is a white box.
Sometimes before getting to that stage I get a blue screen crash report.
Too quick for me to read.
Power:
The green button is on. The ten second switch off works as when I do
this after pulling the power lead the fans inside the machine go round
discharging the current.
I have tried the old hair dryer trick on the PSU, but the PSU appears to
be working. I have a steady green light.
I have hoovered and changed the battery. I left the machine for an hour
without the battery in and drained the settings away. The BIOS / CMOS
whatever repairs, though I do note a jumper for repair which I may look
into.
I have resinstalled the OS from the factory defaults and its doing all
the right things until and up until the account login screen and that is
where it crashes.
I have reseated RAM and NVIDIA and even taken RAM out and tried. There
is only the NVIDIA. All fans work and the machine is blinking all the
correct lights inside. I am not getting a blink error from startup.
I cannot now go into safe mode, though wasn't able to before, cus I need
to complete the Windows setup and cant cus it crashes.
So I don't think its power cus I have the steady light. The hard drive
was checked and is functioning without fault. The machine is happy with
the BIOS and new battery. The memory gets a clear from the startup
checks. SO.... the biggy is the NVIDIA. There is no onboard as both
ports are covered and HP destroyed the screw heads. The centres have
been machined out so you cannot unscrew.
I will now buy another PCiExpress NVIDIA card and see how I get on. I
have noticed that on the strip to the card there are two metal
connectors that appear to have the ends ' not complete ' if that makes
sense.
My gut reaction is that its not the graphics card but a general fault on
the motherboard. I doubt it is the processor.
I just have to get this Windows 7 machine working. I am lost without it.
I can't be using this ' glorified mobile phone ' . Its junk. Seriously
if anyone is thinking of Windows 10 then I would suggest trying it
first. It just isn't the same as using a normal computer. Dunno. Suits
some. You have to disable just so much just to get back to anything like
normality. Simple issue... You cannot drag, say, Notepad from the
Windows folder and put on desktop, or simply copy it. You have to add it
to that hunk of crap that is the menu nonsense and then add to the taskbar.
Also if you don't have that Cortina active you lose search functionality
without checking the settings. Before you always had the search at the
bottom. I now have to fire up explorer. Its change for change sake and I
cant be having any of the Windows bloat running. And as for pop ups and
that update nonsense.... Just annoying to the extreme for me.
