Update Madness
OK, I know I said I was troubled that Windows 7 stopped giving me
updates. Well, since I reinstalled the OS I get nothing but updates.
Yesterday I got Service Pack 1 and last night when I closed down I got
215 updates. Thats on top of the continuous stream of updates that had
been installed already. And surprise surprise I just decided to shut
down to clear updates and there were another 15. And looking at the task
bar there are more waiting to be installed. Its madness I'm telling you.
Madness.
I'm not complaining. Its kinda nice to have them after all the months of
not.
Yesterday I was puzzled why my mails were coming in with a six hour
difference to when I sent them. Thunderbird evidently use the computer
timezone and I hadn't realised the timezone was set for the US, even
though I spicified everything UK in the install. Made me giggle.
I am still getting problems with Thunderbird and logging in. It just
refuses at times to successfully login with BT. I had the same issue
with Live Mail if you recall. Bit more noticable with Thunderbird as
when I cycle through my accounts it tries to communicate with the
servers. I have Googled the issue and it does seem pretty wide spread. I
can live with it. What I found is that if I send a simple mail to the
troubled account it clears the problem.
Anyway, it doesn't even feel like I ever had a problem with the Win7
machine now. All hunky and tickity-boo. I miss the spell checker in Live
Mail. I guess I can get a plug in for that. Other than that the machine
is just as it was now. I guess I'll switch the Win10 machine on once a
week to get updates and make sure its functioning. I have set it up on
an old flat screen. Glad to see the back of it.
And now I'm cruising with the Amiga again. Been trying to get an old 17"
Microvitec working. Same problem as with all the monitors. The on off
switch breaks. It stays on for a while and then goes off and this
monitor will not switch back on. Not a great issue at this time as I
don't have a home for it but would be nice to get it working properly.
I have to try and sort out the A1200 tower tomorrow. There is a problem
that really bewilders me. I have the 1200 motherboard flapping about
with the case cover off the tower cus I have to do one of four things to
resolve this issue. And trust me it can any of the following. The issue
is that I get a garbled screen on boot. Flickering vertical generally.
So I can do one of the following. 01. Push the Blizzard tight into its
slot. 02/03 Press down on the flicker fixer thingy to both the chips and
04 simply check the video connector at the back port. I do very little
in truth and magically the problem is resolved and it will not repeat
while I have the machine running. I can play endless animations and the
like and it will run all day. Next day though same problem. Sometimes I
can just reseat the Blizzard. Another , simply touch the video socket.
My guess its none of these things. And time is that I should check it
over. The 1200 was never designed to go vertical like this and something
is becoming loose. Or she just likes to 'p'me off first thing in the
morning. Amazing the tower still fully functions in truth given that
it's constructed from all the odds and bobs I had lying around.
