Amiga Monitors

Hi

Way back in 1993 when I placed an order for a 1942 monitor I realised
how tricky it was getting monitors for the Amiga. When Commodore went
pop early the next year and I still hadn't received my monitor I began
to sense this may become a problem. I spent an April morning sitting on
the stairs ringing every supplier in the Amiga mags to try and get a
Commodore monitor. In the end I purchased a Microvitec and whilst happy
I guess always felt I wasn't getting the best.

A few years later I added an Amiga 600 to my collection complete with a
Philips CM8633-II. In truth I only bought the computer for the monitor
as I always feared my Microvitec would fail. Interestingly one night I
left the 600 on playing Sensi and when I returned there was this high
pitch noise and the Philips was black. In those days I used a guy who
had a workshop in his garden for mending electrical stuff. What I would
give to have him back right now. He mended the Philips twice for the
same problem, and that monitor has since broken again. I have another.

The point I guess was that although I may be able to keep my 1200
working, I may eventually be defeated by the monitor. So I bought an
A1200 tower which I have connected to an Iiyama Vision Master 17 which
still works. I also use a similar monitor with the 3000T.

I have various monitors like the 1081 hooked up to the C64, various
1084S monitors which are so reliable and even a 1942 connected to an
A2000. Recently I even plugged in a Samsumg T220HD flat screen with
scart to the A1200. So you can see I have various options for monitors.
In truth though the Microvitec is the only monitor that gives me all the
screen resolutions and displays the best pictures.

I have been struggling with one computer in the workshop cus I swapped
out an old Microvitec with the very old multiple connectors on the back
that go through a box. The connector is so short and the connection to
the Amiga is such a strain. Also the image is a little dull. Whilst
mending the Acorn 3000 I used a Microvitec I have that has a faulty
switch and will not stay on without me keeping the button down with my
finger. I had to get a gender converter to use it but a great monitor in
a fix for testing machines. Anyway... finally to the point of the post.
Last night while I was checking the website I came across this image...

A picture of the monitor and it was 'on' AND the button was not
depressed. Late last night this was. Anyroadup I hot footed down the
stairs hooked up the monitor and just kept pressing the button
repeatedly. Eventually it stayed on. I was like cock-a-hoop. I swapped
out with that monitor in the workshop and as long as I switch on from
the strip it works all the time. The picture is just terrific. Man am I
happy. I use that machine for copying stuff from the 4000 as it has CD,
ZIP and large hard drives and runs on OS3.9.

So after all these years I am still hooking up the reliable Microvitecs
and keeping the Amiga alive. I have no idea what I was so worried about
in 1993. What am I like.

Carry on... Whoooo.... cuppa tea. Ar hum.
