Say Say Say
[ Diary Entry ]
No doubt those with a long history with the Amiga will remember that
wonderful little utility called ' Say '. The tool came with its own icon
'Say.info' . The tool could be launched from its own icon or used from
the shell to well to say any piece of text " say hello world " will say
just that.
The sad thing about Say is that it was removed from all the later
versions of the Amiga Workbench. So to get it working under 3.0 this
what you need to do.
The text to speech facility is handled by the narrator.device which
resides in DEVS: . There is also the translator.library in LIBS: and
also the speak-handler in L:.
You need an earlier copy of an Amiga OS such as 1.3 to simply copy those
files over.
Interestingly AMOS Professional came with a newer version of
narrator.device and the translator.library and the speech quality is
considerably better.
The suggestion is that you copy devs/narrator.device and
libs/translator.library from the AMOS Pro disk, and L/Speak-Handler and
Utilities/Say ( plus the old icon ) from the Workbench 1.3 disk. That is
the actual Workbench disk and not the extras disk.
So there you go Say Say Say er sorry ' Say '

I am yet to launch Hal from the Amiga Format Subscribers Superdisk 108
which states ' Hold an intelligent conversation with your computer ' . I
mean seriously out of the two of us needing to be intelligent how on
earth is Hal going to do that.
The disk appears available from the following link, though I'll use the
little plastic thing I am holding in my hand. Just saying.
