Entry 9th December 2018: Post 06: C64 - SID Silence

C64 - SID Silence

So no sound from the 'breadbucket'. I don't normally use this C64
as its a standby. Can't have her not working though. Probably
the fuse or power supply. A pretty common fault with the C64.

I checked the fuse and swapped it out plus changed the power
supply but made no difference what so ever. Scratches head.

Next I plundered an old C64 that wasn't working and removed the
SID chip and swapped it out. Remarkably that did the trick. If
you listen to the first recording it is the loading music to
the C64 program Music Maker. the second recording is me testing
the keys.

Well there you have it. Job done. I shall give the C64 a well
deserved clean tomorrow and write some blurb on the base as to
what I did. Hopefully that has fixed the issue

Success with sounds to prove it

The MOS Technology 6581/8580 SID chip which was one of the first sound chips of its kind. The Programmable Sound Generator no less. The creation of Bob Yannes and completed in 1981. Features the very wonderful Envelope Generator which was pretty unusual for a sound chip in a home computer. It was first demonstrated at CES 1982. It is a work of art when working.

SID - Silence

The fuse actually looks OK.

Changed power and fuse and still no sound.

Fortunately the SID was socketed
on this much later motherboard.

Amazing how many chips are socketed.

SID chip has now been swapped out.

Sound recorder at the ready. AND WHAT DID I HEAR

The original SID chip [ 49th week of 1982 ]

And the replacement chip. Working [ 14th week of 1985 ]
A much later chip and a better bet.
