Entry 12th July 2019: Post 02: Amiga 4000d - 030 board check.

Amiga 4000d - 030 board check.

Although the two computers I am going to feature here are broken
I do still check their status to see if the crippled boards have
deteriorated any further.

The first is an 030 4000d that was given to me broken in 2010. The
computer has a broken mouse with only the click working and not
any directional movement. Whilst the board came with the battery
removed it is obvious that damage had occurred to the traces, tracks
and various localised chips in the vicinity.

When you study the schematics for the area around the battery you
will see that in addition to the RTC there is a chip supporting
some of the functionality of the mouse/joystick. It is not clear
to me as to whether the battery damage is the route cause but it
cannot be ruled out.

Further, it appears that capacitors to the rear of the board may
have leaked also and caused some damage, though I can not be sure.
Saying all that the computer still boots without issue and can
be operated with the Right-Amiga and direction buttons. The
process is a little slow and tedious and not something you would
ever be able to tolerate.

Looking at the general area around the battery, there does appear
to be further corrosion. I have tried to contain it but it is
difficult treating the areas in and around the pins and through
holes to the motherboard. Always a problem. There is also a rogue
wire that comes through the board by the battery terminals which
I have endeavoured to remove but still snags the cotton buds. I
guess I could get lint free, but really it doesn't matter.

I do have a spare motherboard for one of these machines. Just have
to decide which. For now I have plenty number of active A4000ds so
it really isn't an issue.
