Never give up I guess
Hi
Last night I dragged out four Spectrum 48Ks with varying degrees of
problems. The most minor being a failed string of keys on the right side
and the most serious total nonsense on the screen. For those that have
used a Spectrum one of the most annoying aspects is the lack of power
switch. You literally have to keep removing the power supply. Many of
the Spectrums I have , do have dodgy power connectors that require a
certain amount of tweaking from the power connector.
Next up with the Spectrum you need the black rectangular box to be deep
black and uniform and then to magically clear to the entry message. The
second least problematic of the four machines got to this message but
then fails to respond to any keyboard inputs.
Anyway... I decided it was time to merge these busted machines,
hopefully into one working Spectrum. I was also mucking around with the
Atari and following some useful threads on the web and watching a
particularly informative video. In getting sidetracked I had left
powered on and connected to the bw tv on the bench the Spectrum with the
faulty input and k keys.
So some time later I returned to what was now a darkened room save for
the light from the tv screen. Anyway I had another go with the Spectrum
and like magic the 'i' key was now working, along with all the other
busted keys. So excited was I that I set up a tape machine and started
playing games. Gotta be a fluke. I switched off and left a while and
came back... Amazing still fully functional. This morning first thing I
did was check and still working without fault. I have a sticker on this
computer saying its busted from yonks ago. Been working all day... it
really is amazing.
Anyway, I will check regularly from now on and maybe just keep the
computer warmed up on a regular basis. Just shows really.
