Not more rubber bands
Hi
Final update on the 1010. Well there is definitely something not quite
right about the little white box. The service manual for this unit shows
a different version to the one I have. The difference mainly appears to
be in the top mechanism. There is a metal plate shown in the manual and
on my other unit and the large pulley wheel varies. You recall that I
said I found two small plastic white components in the unit when I
opened it, well I still cannot find a home for these. The machine
performs all its mechanical functions satisfactorily and is in
communication with the computer but it always has a read error. I will
have to try and find some further detail on the specific model to see if
something else is missing.
Fortunately the XC12 cassette data drive works just fine since I gave it
a good clean. I was swapping out cassettes and recording pretty
endlessly last night without any issues. Worked brilliantly.
May sound odd but I am able to put the 400, 800 and the 600XL and 800XL
plus cassettes to bed now as I move onto other projects. I will revisit
the 1010 when I get further information. I still have the 1050 to sort
out so still work to do.
Just to point out that I cannot have a computer than cannot record and
remember stuff. Since the dawn of the ZX81 it was very important to me
that I am able to save my efforts. Until I can do so I refuse to give up
with a machine. I have two full tapes now of various muckings about with
the Atari and that is sufficient for me to be able to remember and log
my activities. Great fun.
I was using the 600XL in the main due to the thinner machine. It sits
nicely on top of the 400 so I didn't have to keep moving the machines
about. Nice unit.. I have two and both work.

The 600XL is the smaller sister of the 800XL which if you look at the
images you can see the 1010 cassette drive. Interestingly someone wired
together the power units for the 1050 and main computer to one plug so
when I plug in the computer the floppy and or the 1050 come on at the
same time.
