Amstrad 6128plus
Hi
I was checking through the images on the website for the
Amstrad and suddenly realised that I had a CM14 monitor.
This is significant insomuch that it powers the Plus range
of Amstrads that have been lying dormant in their boxes.
These computers only have two connectors that you attach
and although the 6128 has the dreaded 3” disk drive it
does not have a separate power supply on a 12V link to
the monitor.
I plugged in and the first thing you discover is that BASIC
comes on a cartridge that you need to have plugged in. The
image on the screen was none too clear and the on and off
button did start to give some meaning. I then mucked around
with the cartridge and soon realised it was the cause of
the issues. I will clean up when my window cleaner arrives.
Soon though I had a nice blue screen with two options F1
for BASIC and F2 for the game on the cartridge.
Fired up cartridge and did the CAT scan for the directory
and surprise surprise the disc drive just went round and round.
I set too dismantling the computer, as you do, and was
relieved to discover a very simple clean interior. Reminded
me of the A600 in many ways. I removed the 3” drive and
opened up. The pulley was almost fully visible on this type
which was a good thing as the rubber band had turned to
liquorice. Both pulley wheels were gunged up and the rubber
had returned to its native state I guess. Just dreadful.
Took me all night to clean up.
With new band in place I fired up the machine and I was very
quickly able to use the drive and play with BASIC. The cartridge
played up a bit but calmed down with use.
And so I add yet another computer to the list of those with the
3” drive.

I do believe that that concludes my little adventure into 3”
drives. Well I do hope so. Saying that I have yet to open up
the boxed Tatung Einstein.... Hmm interesting. Hopefully I
haven’t repeated myself. I know I wrote the post cus I recall
not being able to spell licorsih , likoriche, leakorfish, licorishe ...
Anyway you get the idea
Going now
