A600 Monitors
Hi
This last few days I have been mucking around with an A600 and 2.05. I
was trying to emulate the Checkmate but I found the 2.05 a little better
to handle than the 2.04. Like I said earlier wish I could have found the
2.1 install disk.
I moved all the stuff off the hard drive with the old Parnet and copied
to ZIP again, which is what I normally do anyway. I then formatted the
drive and installed the OS. It kinda threw me cus I thought it would put
the OS on the current Workbench. Instead it created another
volume/partition of a modest 6mb in size. So I renamed that to System2.0
and then had Work and left the other Workbench as is.
Next up I set about replicating all the software off the Checkmate and
going through a large number of disk boxes. I am truly amazed at how
very few of the pre 3.0 software actually had a hard disk install. Most
were just a straight copy. Some needed the assigns. If you did get a
hard disk install it always wanted to put it in the SYS volume and I
really don't have the space. I have like a two 39's and 6mb volume.
Has been most enjoyable going back in time again to the 2.04-05 era and
mucking around with software. You sense the transition from the 1.3 era
to the new and so you are getting some quite imaginative use of icons. I
do like icons. I always copy across the designs and use. So you get the
Dpaint moving on to DPaintIII and various text based tools like
Kindwords and Protext, PenPal etc. But the earlier versions. Kindwords
is Wordworth I discovered, just earlier. The games are getting a lot
more colourful and 3D. Some great chess games like Colossus Chess.
I don't mind the 600, but having been brought up on the 1200 I can't
think of an overwhelming reason to use one. I have pretty well exhausted
my 600 collection that exists on the Checkmate and am now copying the
partitions onto the A1200 so I can put them onto ZIP.
Whilst looking for the 2.1 install disk I came across this image from my
website... Which was a surprise to me.

It was then that I realised I had another A600HD hidden away. I had an
idea and ventured into the back of a wardrobe and there she was. I
quickly fired the A600 up and she booted straight into the OS. There was
a GVP-G Lok icon plus various Scala icons on the screen plus DPaintIV.
Only a 20mb hard drive which is pretty useless, but works all the same.
The computer is whiter than white. I am guessing this was bought to do
video titling. They use to sell 600s at Jessops for video work.
I am not going to use the 600s. I will fire them up now , both that have
the internal HDs just to keep the disks working. I just wanted a machine
that I could refer to is the Checkmate was to fall over.
I have the A500 with the Viper still running without fault. So I now
have two more machines that I have to check during the week. I am having
problems with the 2000 with the accelerator. I have a feeling that this
is actually a capacitor issue as the machine is fine on boot the after a
while bombs out and then refuses to boot again. I've threatened it with
a rolled up copy of 'What-a-Load-of-PC-Junk Weekly' but that didn't
work. So tomorrow I will get the old clothes on and oily rag and open
the computer up. Has to be done.
Better go to bed its two again in the morning. Rain stopped.
