Cleaning a yellowed computer
Ian
Interesting subject in truth cus we tiptoe into the whole issue of
colour fastness. If you notice once brightly coloured panels on building
become dreary and dull. Concrete paving that had bright contrasting
colour becomes just monochrome. Even poor old Barbies legs become sticky
and degrade. I have a plastic wire that has burnt straight into a
beautiful retro gaming case.
I say all this cus the issue of degrading elements within manufactured
products are just not going to stand the test of time. Whether they are
elements in the built environment or that lovely hessian wall covering
that has the square shadow from a removed picture. Its amazing really
what UV does. The trick is to avoid it. Paintings suffer dreadfully and
for many years have been experimenting with ways of showing artwork
without degrading the items.
For me I turn what I call a blind eye. Tungsten lights are already
yellow so you don't notice the discolouration so much. Also low levels
of lighting, curtain shut. LED bulbs possibly. I do worry about cleaning
the kit. Some in truth hasn't gone yellow at all. I have experimented
with location and covering, but interestingly have had yellowing to even
fully boxed items. Its more pronounced cus of the light colour of
Amigas. All of the plastics go yellow or even pink. You should see some
of the plastic windows I've had to survey. They go pink.
Its funny actually cus when the yellowing first started to happen people
thought it was cus of folk smoking.
Anyway I have white Amigas and yellow Amigas. The model that has the
greatest success rate is the humble A600. I have twelve and only one has
gone slightly yellow. The A1200 is next best. I have a fascia on a 4000d
that has gone very deep yellow. A500s are the worst... they really do go
off colour quite quickly.
Anyway... cuppa. Very interesting. I may try that one day.
