Red Hot Spectrum
Hi
My goodness does the heatsink on a Spectrum 128K get hot. I may just
leave this on in the winter and warm the house with it. I have a number
of these units and all have a problem one way or another. Mostly it is
due to the keyboard issue and membranes I guess.

I was watching some helpful videos on YouTube and it was amazing how
many times Transistor TR4 came up and the issue of overpowering and
blowing. Seems a basic problem with the machine given that if adjacent
TR5 stays open it will destroy TR4 in seconds. The guy on there also
found components installed back to front released from the factory.
As ever there are issues here beyond my skills of repair, though am
comforted with guys around like the one I saw on YouTube we should be
able to keep the Speccy alive in the future.
I learned a lot these last few days about 'collectors' and 'emitters'
and continuity testing and understanding the base pin identification
etc. Its just the de-soldering and the way you reconnect the transistors
that freaks me out. I guess I could play around with some old kit. Just
that I really have no skills in this field. Shame.. wish I'd gotten into
this earlier. Looks fascinating I have to say.
