Index Errors
Hi
AMDDuron running XP and I have two drives. The second was partitioned
2x40GB and I need the one drive to be Drive D. That's important cus the
HTM docs I have created, of which there are a gzillion need the old
/d|/folder/file tag and I am not going to start editing pages for a
different drive letter. I had already plundered a 500GB USB drive to put
some partial sense to the machine. Drive D though was already allocated
to the CD writer. This computer is from 2004 and has Nero on it. I kinda
wanted the machine for writing discs with the Amiga archive now
installed. I know changing the letter may be risky.. but how much I
hadn't bargained for.
So I did the do and tested Nero and all was fine. And then the problems
started . I get a general error through windows that it cannot validate
the drive that had been given the new letter. Some kind of security
issue and problem with CHKDSK. The drive whilst being visible was
showing that it was not formatted. So I tried to format but failed and
so used the management window to format, which I never really trust.
Anyway, rest of the daylight hours were fine and I was pleasantly
loading in my HTM and various Amiga folders from my external Maxtor USB
drive. I then noticed the colour on the web pages were a bit light and
not vivid and rich. I checked the settings but sadly this AMD was firing
off the motherboard with no graphics card. So I decided to change that.
I went on the hunt and dug out two cards . A NVIDIA GeForce2 Ti and a
Radeon Ati95508e 128DDR.. well thats what I scribbled down. I decided on
the NVIDIA as it had a fan on the card and not just a heat sink as with
the Radeon. So opened up the computer and plugged in the card. And
that's when the problems really started.
I am advised by the OS that there are errors on the disk and I should
allow the CHKDSK to do its job. It then hung on process 2 of 3 as it
tried to correct errors in index $i30 and hung on 53% complete 77228. I
decided to run it again and noted it was having issues with the
partition that I did not give a new drive letter. So I hot footed up
here and checked the net which was worse than useless, directing me to
defunct Windows help pages... It was all pointing to a busted hard drive.
When I got back the machine was scrolling through every file on the
machine moving orphaned files to a new directory with just a number as
its index. I guessed the index system had fallen over and the thousands
of freshly loaded files were out of their respective folders and now
were being shunted around the drive. I sat there for a good hour
watching this before digging out another spare hard drive 80GB. I just
got so frustrated I switched the machine off from the power button
whilst it was reorganising stuff.
I then switched back on and cancelled the CHKDSK at boot. Now here is
the thing.. when I got in to the system there was absolutely nothing
wrong with the drives. All files were still in their places and nothing
looked out of order. But when this happens you just can't trust the drive.
So I opened up and swapped out the drive. Into the BIOS to detect the
new drive. I was unable again to format from the window in the OS as the
drive was filled with work garbage. Fired up and tried to go into
SafeMode but there was no response from the keyboard. The thing was
bust. I really wasn't having any luck. By now its like three in the
morning. Into SafeMode and formatting drive while playing Arcade Snooker
on the Amiga. By now its getting light and the birds are singing.
All worked fine. The NVIDIA was autodetected by the OS and we press on.
Great thing about my stored files and exe stuff is that I managed to
acquire copies before they introduced the first file that simply
connects to the web to download the software. This machine, like most
here does not connect to the internet. It simply gets a network number
which I write on a large sticky that goes on the side of the machine and
then gets added to the family for internal use. So having software that
does not need to go on the internet to play and edit video and to use
Photoshop etc is very important. And I have a good batch of software
that gets plugged in and used on all my machines. You can't do that now
cus they all need the internet to validate and try to flog you stuff.
So in the lounge tonight and transferring even more stuff to the AMD.
And she's fine. I have set her off now copying over the contents of the
Amiga archive and ETA on completion is around midnight. And then she'll
be locked and loaded and ready to rock and roll.
Kinda sad when you break the back on a problem and all is sorted. All
part of the fun.
And why am I here blurting on about this, well this group was created to
create a diary of all that I do so that I can refer to it if necessary
in the future. Its what I do.
