The old freezer trick
Martin
Mostly my issue is with the 2.5 drives. I can hit a 3.5 with a hammer,
even the XTs still work. The 2.5's though are a pig to get running when
they have been dormant for a long time. I hadn't realised it was such a
problem. Anything over five years will have locked up. Its the same for
the Acorns . They are all busted. The annoyance is that the data is
still on the disks. I have a broken 2.5 80mb which was my first drive
for the 1200. I managed to break a pin trying to fit it in an old MTEC
for the A500.
I find it very difficult using an Amiga without the hard drive whirring
away. The A500 just seems so lifeless. That's why I can't be doing these
flash cards. I almost need a bogus drive in the machine to make me feel
at home. I've been running my A1200 tonight and its like preparing an
old aeroplane to fly. First I switch on the first SCSI external box with
its own fan. Then the second and then the external CDRom drive. Next up
its the actual 1200 with the internal 2.5. The Blizzard flicks the blue
lines on the screen and my long mount list runs on the screen and the
Microvitec clicks as it changes screen mode and once its loaded onto the
screen not only all the drives I have but also also the network drives
and icons I'm ready to play. I wouldn't have it any other way. The
4000/40 is very quiet... saying that, the other 4000 that sits over is
very noisy. AT least the 500 has the GVP sidecar and that makes a
noise... just.
