Talking to a clean machine
My copy of User Einstein Volume 1 Number 1 arrived today and
inside it talks about the Einstein being a ‘ clean machine ‘
Einstein User Nov 1984
The Einstein is a clean machine. Turn it on and it’s at machine-
operating system (MOS) level, and the only way you can talk to
it is in Machine Language (ML), the binary notation which is
almost impossible for the beginner to understand. The lack of
resident programming language means that you can LOAD in a wide
range of languages as they are needed.
BASIC ... Put your system disk into the drive and type XBAS
BBC Basic ... available for the Einstein and since it’s a clean
machine it can be LOADed into the machine at DOS level.
CIS Cobol ... In the 1950s an American organisation called CODASYL
(Committee on Data Systems Language ) devised a language to be
known as Cobol. A British company Micro Focus devised a special
version called CIS Cobol and it is this which is shortly to become
available ( cost £375)
Forth ... Two versions are to become available for the Einstein.
The Kuma version selling at £46 and Einsoft’s own version called
Superforth.
Pascal ... as developed for the Einstein by Hisoft
Dr Logo ... ( Digital Research ) is bundled with the Einstein.
Other Languages ... Dr Roy Clarke’s Bradford Laboratory has already
been able to adapt other languages like UNIX-orientated C language
and Fotran.
CP/M .. Though not technically an operating system CP/M ( Control
Program Monitor ) and the Einstein can handle such programs. Since
many CP/M programs are written for a screen 80 characters wide it
may be necessary to fit a new 80-column screen card before you can
run them. They will of course have to be obtained on 3” disk.
Machine Code and Assembler ... Good news there is an assembler for
the Einstein and a full review on page 10 of this issue.
Well there you have it. All that you probably didn’t want to know
about the Einstein. There is a very nice picture of Dr T.S. Lin
chairman of Tatung UK Ltd. ( home in Taiwan }. The question is
whether he was anything to do with Dr. T’s Music Software – Midi
recording studio for the Amiga.
Enough reading for now. Time to go play.
