Down the rabbit hole

Hi Paul

I have so much recorded on tape and have shelves full of tapes. Mostly
old comedy and music. I go through them each day as a ritual at
breakfast, only for like ten or fifteen minutes. If I find anything
interesting I copy it to dvd and then may use with the A1200 to make
some basic black and white edits which I use as screen savers. Letting
them run in the background. They are also a good test for a machine. The
A2000 has been ticking away for the last two hours now running a loop of
taped video.

Interestingly the thing that actually killed video was screen
resolution. If you take the early versions of Friends for instance, even
the disc set and watch the first few series they are absolutely crisp
and clear on the old fashioned SONY TV. The same series looks dreadful
on the flat screen TV. But by the time you move into the third onwards
series the picture is brilliant on the flat screen and crap on the old
TV. Same with recorded channels. It all started to go pop in around
2007. You can see the image quality of the recorded product just fading
away as they try to stretch the screen display.

I actually broke my first Bravia and the guys at SONY couldn't
understand. But I knew what happened I was watching all my old videos in
the screen resolution to match the old TV so I had black strips down the
sides of the image and I think that popped the screen.

I can still watch all my very old recorded videos from early 80's to say
2007 and the images are wonderful. Well except for SKY before they went
digital.

TV and video was at a high in the nineties and I still do like my
videos. The quality degrades a bit when you copy to DvD even at HQ. But
you have to watch them on an old fashioned TV at a time when the
resolution was standard TV size. I don't have an issue with the flat
screen TV. Hell, modern films look quite magical on them. Thing is the
older stuff just doesn't fit on the flat screen.

Shame about Teletext [ don't go there ]
