ScuzzBlog: Diaries August 2019

Entry 5th August 2019: Post 03: Make one yourself.

Make one yourself.

You know how I said that the EZ-Tower was propping up a bench, well
turns out that on the top of the tower were three magazines of the
period along with a Haynes book on how to build your own PC and an
Amiga Workbench book. No idea when they were placed on the tower.
The magazines were used to make up the level difference.

I do so miss glossy publications, and it's not just for the sexy
images of Caprice Bourret, Daniela Pestova and Britney Spears. Mens
style magazines like GQ, Arena, Esquire and FHM were for me great
sources of tech information and reviews of all things from fashion
to music to films and even games. It was a great insight into what
was current. Also over the years it was interesting to flick
back through the pages and see what was hot in the day and just
how successful they were.

The Haynes book is classic and has some wonderful images inside. It
was dated around the era of XP and I did use the book on several
occasions, though never to actually build a PC. Again it distresses
me no end the lack of actual published work that you can get in
print. In truth I am sick to death when searching for technical
help having to wade through endless posts on blogs by absolute
nobodies with very little validated fact. Seems to be the way of
the world now... but hey.

There was also a good old thick volume Workbench book which I
believe was the best they ever produced. It is very very useful
and of a size that comes in very handy for propping stuff up.

And so the tower awaits a donor and I now place watches on Ebay
and chalk that one up as a future project. It's what I do. Climbing
the mountain is never a race. Patience plus time make worthy reward.

Make one yourself.
