Atari Falcon - Not actually grey.
Continuing my review of computer cases and how they have faired
since arriving all those many years ago, today I feature the Atari
Falcon 030.
The Falcon came in three styles of casing. The first based on the
FX-1, the second on the ST with the lighter keys, and the third
which happens to be mine with the lighter than the FX-1 case but
with the darker keys and white writing. The case is quite clearly
not the grey of the ST range of Atari computers.
All the machines I am featuring this week have for the most part
been 'left out' as it were. They sit on benches or shelves and
are protected only by dust covers. I do not generally store my
computers in boxes where they may be subject to heat build up.
My policy appears to have worked as very few of my machines have
yellowed badly as a result.
The Falcon appears generally the same as it did when it arrived
and works without fault irrespective of the periods of downtime.
The Falcon was released in 1992 comes with an 030 MC68030 making
it probably the fastest stock wedge released. It certainly is fast.
The features I love are the PSU in the case, SCSI out the back
and the use of a standard PC monitor. What I don't like is the
mouse out the bottom and the odd shape to the function keys. Other
than that it's OK I guess, if you like Atari. The OS is TOS and
GEM and given my years with the 1512 is very familiar in its use.
Not much more to add. She worked just fine and to someone use to
operating Atari computers I guess she would be a dream. For me I
just don't have enough stuff that I can use on an Atari to make
using the computer of any use. I do have an SCSI CD-ROM for the
Falcon and an envelope of CDs and disks, but it really isn't my
cup of tea. Anyhoo she is back on her shelf till I get the urge
to switch her on again.
