Entry 8th December 2018: Post 01: Atari CX-2600A

Atari CX-2600A

Known as the VCS model or better just the 'Woody' from the fake
veneer to the front, this little beast is actually quite ancient
in terms of retro consoles and computers. Its history goes all
the way back to the seventies. The unit boxed here was the later
version released in 1980 with only the four front switches.

I do show an earlier version in the next post with the six
front switches dating from 1978-80.

I always struggle a little with the Atari given that in truth I
don't really like them. I do try to warm to the product range
but being a true Amigan I just never have been comfortable moving
over to the dark side.

This console for me has but one game that I love and that is the
very splendid River Raid. Had it not been for that game I doubt
I would have even ever known about this console. To this day it
is the only game I can play on the games machine.

The Atari VCS or CX-2600A with a CPU 8-bitMOS Technology 6507
running at 1.19 MHz. The console has 128 bytes of RAM. The unit
came with the paddles or the standard CX10 joystick. Classic
games I guess were Space Invaders and Pacman plus Asteroids.

Not much else I can say. I have the all black version and the
cost reduced 'Rainbow' 2600 which I prefer. For me they are an
interesting item to have but as with most top loaders have very
little interest to me..... they are not a computer in my books.
