ScuzzBlog: Diaries December 2022

Entry 10th December 2022: Post 1: Scrabble - Have boards will travel.

Scrabble - Have boards will travel.

If you have been following my blogs for the year you may have seen
a theme wending its way through my meanderings. The theme being
life before the computer. I seem to be sat in front of a computer
for so long now I have forgotten just what it was like before. So
I dredged through my old journals and have enjoyed very much re-
living some of my younger days.

Over the months I have put together some of the treasured board
games that I had, and for some reason had vanished from my life.
Most are playable on the computer so it's not hard to remember the
days sat around a table with your family or school chums. The box
game Board Genius for the Amiga has four classics of the day, of
which three I have had to re-acquire. I already had Monopoly and
earlier this year I obtained Cluedo and Risk. This only left the
game Scrabble which I feature today. To be more accurate the game
I show is Travel Scrabble.

I have not been without the game in truth since probably the days
when the original game went walkies. I have had this as both a
Spectrum game and an Amstrad game for both disk and tape.

Travel Scrabble has to be the simplest and yet most addictive
game you can play. The box is so easy to store and carry about.
I'm sure most of you have played the game at some point. Dating
from 1938 as the creation of one Alfred Mosher Butts it is a
variation of an earlier game he invented called Lexiko. J W Spear
began selling the game in 1955 and then became a subsidiary of
Mattel. The rights were eventually acquired by Hasbro.

In 2004 the game was added to the National Toy Hall of Fame.

It didn't take me long to get hooked on the Amiga US Gold version
which for me is the best version on the computer.

It has been an interesting adventure collecting old board games.
I have just one more to feature this side of 2023 and then I shall
compile a fresh list for next year and build even further.
