ScuzzBlog: Diaries December 2023

Entry 05th December 2023: Post 1: Heddley - AmigaGuide authoring software.

Heddley - AmigaGuide authoring software.

The topic of Amiga database software and journal style note making
came up the other day, and those that know me well understand that
I do like recording stuff on the computer. For me the best type
of software to make journal style entries has to be the simplest
and most easy to use. On the PC I go with Notepad and simple save
my entries as HTM documents so I can view in a browser and add
interactive content such as images and video.

The Amiga can also support HTML and in addition can readily read
a PC text document. Simple text always has been the most easy of
recording methods and for this a suitable text editor and file
manager will suffice for journal purposes. I will reference this
in my blog for tomorrow. However, there is the matter of data
searching and linking to other content. Fortunately the Amiga is
blessed with a HTML style browsing tool in the form of AmigaGuide.
The node base linking style sheets are just perfect for a more
complex journal support format.

If you are not up for fully scripting your own AmigaGuide there
is always the very wonderful Heddley on hand. This is a GUI based
system that allows you to write and customise your guides from a
simple to use interface.

Heddley was first given out free on the Amiga in an edition of
Amiga Shopper which I featured on an earlier blog. I also made
reference to the 1.20b version which was released with the May 99
copy of Amiga Format. Previously I had not included the disk but
in referencing it recently I discovered the disk is not for down-
load on the EAB Magazine Rack site. Not to be deterred I made my
own ADF version and provide that today. I also include the 'gui-
front.library ' needed to drive the software.

I have reproduced the pages from the magazine plus some updated
snapshots from the emulator. Although the disks are crunched on
the Amiga using ADFBlitzer I test the ADF images on the PC to make
sure they work when folk download over the internet.

I had earlier created disk images of the May 99 cover disks for
Amiga Format but these were in DMS format. To assist I include
also those disks plus DMS and DFace which is a GUI for extracting
archived files on the Amiga. By doing this I covered pretty much
all bases.

I also include some older blog entries for AmigaGuide. I have
done this as a prelude to my blog tomorrow regarding CED and the
very wonderful DOpus and the value of personal logs.

Hope that made sense.
