Entry 7th July 2023: Post 1: Stylophone - Miniature electronic keyboard.
Stylophone - Pocket electronic organ.
First up get the name right or you will be searching endless web
pages for insulation board. So Stylophone and not Styrofoam.
This little gadget is actually a miniature analogue electronic
keyboard musical instrument with a stylus. It was invented by one
Brian Jarvis in 1967 and manufactured by Dubreq in 1968.
Story goes that Brian was repairing his child's organ and created
his own electronic circuits to do this. In doing so he realised
how simple it was to wire a circuit board to a keyboard and so
set to designing the Stylophone. The instrument was due to be
aired on the David Frost show if I recall but was snagged by
Rolf Harris to play on his show. And so the Stylophone was born.
I kinda would have liked one myself growing up but even in those
days 15 quid was a lot of money for a toy.
Fortunately in 2007 young Ben Jarvis the son of Brian teamed up
yet again with Dubreq and formed a company called Re:Creation and
had a revamped replica made out in China. I say revamped cus I
am pretty sure that the original didn't have a mp3 port.
Anyhoo here is a picture of the 2007 version which seriously is
pretty much identical to the original. All I can say is that I
am glad I hung onto my melodica in the day and didn't press my
parents to buy one of these.
It is not my intention to comment about the lives of celebrities
but it is worth noting that Rolf Harris recently died. Growing up
Rolf would finish his program by doing a painting. He used crude
decorating thick brushes to create his artwork on a very large
canvas. His catch phrase was 'can you see what it is yet'. I was
but a child but I can recall being absolutely mesmerised by the
wonderful works he created. Everything else apart I believe that
that is how I would like to remember him. And for introducing
the Stylophone to the world.
