ScuzzBlog: Diaries July 2023

Entry 21st July 2023: Post 1: NewTek DigiView - Let us be clear.

NewTek DigiView - Let us be clear.

I read on one of the forums that somebody was hoping that someone
would somehow make a NewTek DigiView digitiser as the ones on
Ebay never seemed to have the actual kit. Interesting.

To be clear let me just say this. Might help.

01: Take off the rose tinted glasses. If you are expecting modern
style crisp sharp images then forget it. No amount of editing in
DigiPaint or equal will make much of a difference.

02: Unless you have a big box Amiga or oodles of RAM on your basic
Amiga then you are going to suffer dreadful memory drain as colour
images will burn through your RAM very quickly. Worse, is that if
you want to save to floppy prepare for the shocker of just how
little you can get on a disk.

03: There is no reason what so ever today to capture your own images
on an Amiga. Just use any other modern device and transfer the pics
to the Amiga if you are so keen to edit stuff. Personally I have
never seen the point of using the Amiga when I have photo realistic
editing tools on the PC.

04: The DigiView is a strange beast. It works on the basis of using
a monochrome camera and mounting this over your art image and taking
three pass images using the special colour filter. The software
then combines the images to create the colour picture.

Talk about adding complexity to the blurring process. Having spent
a considerable amount of years using a SONY HandyCam and a Vidi-
Amiga I can assure you that getting a good quality colour image
is already a crap shoot without adding a three pass monochrome
filter process. In truth just get a Pro-Grabber or Vidi-Amiga and
get rid of the colour filter nonsense.

05: If you anticipate that someone in this day an age is going to
make a DigiView digitiser then I guess you are going to be truly
disappointed. The processes used are archaic at best and were fast
made redundant by scanners and way better digitisers. The one I
have was still sealed in its plastic bag and had never been used.

For me I wouldn't bother with colour digitising on the Amiga. The
way forward is to get an image off your phone stick it in a paint
package on the PC. Then take into PPaint on the Amiga if you really
want to muck around with old paint packages and art work creation.

To be clear do not use an old Amiga digitiser. Unless fuzzy, blurred
and with colour bleed was the mood you were trying to create.
