Entry 8th June 2018: Post 4: Nintendo Entertainment System

Nintendo - Control Deck ' not a console ' by Mattel

Not sure of the exact manufacturing procedures for the Nintendo
Entertainment System but this Control Deck was made in the UK by
Mattel.

OK bit of history. The NES was launched in many ways in the US as
more than just a games machine and more a lesson in generating
consumer confidence. Much of the problems with the gaming industry
at the time resulted from a confused games customer that really
wasn't at all sure what it was that they were buying. A lot of
games were the same product but with varying and somewhat
outrageous graphical sales images on media.

Nintendo had been set to do a deal with Atari to develop their
next generation machine but the deal fell through due to strange
goings on at an exhibition regarding one of Atari's competitors
showing what they believed was an exclusive Nintendo game.

And so when Nintendo finally launched the NES they implemented
a variety of mechanisms to try and reassure waning consumer
confidence. Firstly the system was badged as an Entertainment
System and not a game or video system. The unit was also given
the name of ' Control Deck ' and not console. Cartridges were
given the name ' Game Paks ' and not video games. To try and
deter unlicensed games the 10NES lockout chip system lockout
key basically coupled each game to the Control Deck. Further
the games paks and images carried artwork that was as close
a representation of the real game as possible. Nintendo went
one step further to guarantee and approve products used on
their systems. This took away all ambiguity of quality and in
many ways was instrumental in turning the gaming industry around.

And so was born the ' Control Deck ' and its not a console.
