ScuzzBlog: Diaries June 2023

Entry 6th June 2023: Post 1: Catwoman - The Bat and the Cat.

Catwoman - The Bat and the Cat.

Believe it or not but I have the full set of trading cards for
Batman and Robin which I collected as a kid in the sixties. The
dynamic duo were all the rage in the day and each week I would
sit watching transfixed by the glorious imagery of these super
heroes. It was quite a treat having the cards cus they were in
full colour , whereas the TV was still in black and white.

Onward to today and here I am watching yet another version of
what appears to be the same story, but with different actors.

Sad is the new black ... but should I be surprised. The star of
this current rendition is Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame. I was
talked into buying the box set of that series by a girl at work
and still to this day have watched but one episode. You would have
thought that Mr Pattinson would have had his fill of the bat
species .. or 'Cold Ones'.

So why so sad. With each version of this saga the story just gets
more and more sad. The once colourful characters get gloomier and
more sinister. I didn't mind the interpretation but I do question
why nobody seems to be able to come up with a new story that takes
us beyond the formula Joker, Riddler and Batman struggling with
the constant reminder of the death of his family. If you rewind
to the original Batman we had a very black and white colourful
dynamic duo complete with Robin and the world was anything but
dark and sad.

I was attracted by the first in this new reboot by the inclusion
of Catwoman played by Zoe Kravitz, who appears at the beginning
and not at the end as in the last but one version. Particularly
as any actress playing the part would need to compete with the
statuesque Anne Hatheway. In truth whilst both of the stars of
this film played admirable parts in what was quite an enjoyable
adventure, sadly neither were so stunning as to be that memorable.

I was moved to buy a few Catwoman 'comix' given that I hadn't got
any in the collection. Truth is they were so bad I won't be adding
any more. The art quality was not up to the standard of my other
comic books. So I gathered no further intel on a character that
never really got further than Michelle Pfieffer as the best of
the best in terms of interpretation. Shame really cus I thought
the Anne Hatheway character deserved a fresh spin out if only to
see her pin a guy to the wall with her high heels again.

I fear that the current politically correct bias will drain such
goddesses of the comic world from our screens, if the likes of
Ms Marvel have their way. I know this is DC but seriously if they
make these things any darker you won't be able to see the actors
anyway. Hopefully they can make a better fist of it this time and
at least try to add some seriously new content. I mean if they
are short of ideas I have a very good set of trading cards they
can borrow to look at.

Zoe Kravitz is such a petite small girl. I didn't sense any real
love affair with cats, though she didn't really interact with
many. Below is a link to her dads most successful hit which is
still a blast after all these years.
