ScuzzBlog: Diaries June 2023

Entry 8th June 2023: Post 1: My home network of Windows PCs.

My home network of Windows PCs.

I have around twenty tin box type PCs active in the house running
a version of Windows. These range form Windows3.1 thro all the way
to Windows 10.

I maintain all the computers and have them connected to the power
and monitors plus local network so that I can use them at the
drop of a hat. There isn't a location in the house that I cannot
access a PC and connect to others in the house.

Each computer has been maintained over the years and I check them
on a pretty regular basis. Each has its own specific purpose and will
be kitted with such things as ZIP drives, CD and DVD writers plus
various storage devices containing vaults of my data.

Today I decided to snapshot the desktop of each to record that they
are all working and their status. I can say they all booted without
fault and showed up on the neighbourhood network windows. And so
job done and I can now power them down.

All the PCs have girlie names so I can remember which one is which
when viewing on the network. Dotted around the house I have hubs
of Ethernet switches connecting cables to computers. I do not use
wireless and do not have any computer whilst on the net connected
to the internet. I have always enjoyed my privacy. This is my
private world for my own private use.

I do have one switch connected to the internet to feed the Win7,
Win10, PlayStation and XBOX. When active the base Ethernet is
disconnected.

Fortunately I have the support discs, disks and documentation for
all the PCs plus the loaded software disks/discs. Each of the PCs
has a computer specific box that is labelled with the computers
name so I can find stuff in a hurry.

Finally, whilst I do love my retro I do also love my PCs. I use
the Windows system cus it's the one that I know best and have the
software and machines for. I don't have anything against Apple
it's just that the Apple OS and systems are crap. In my view. I
could go on but really, why bother. People like Apple, I get it.
Just that I hate the company with a vengeance. Windows may be
shite but at least it's shite I know. And Microsoft are so dumb
they fill their systems with road blocks that are so vulnerable
a kid of three could drive through them. I like that.

Anyhoo here are my n-n-n-n-n-n-n-nineteen dumb PCs. And they all
work.

My home network of Windows PCs.

PC Madness

So am I mad for having so many PCs.
Very probably, but then I'm retired
and enjoy each day mucking around
with all my computers, so I guess
it's a case of what ever makes you
happy.

It was never my intention to assemble
a large collection of tin boxes.
They were for the most part gifted to
me as computers in the three offices
I was responsible for were replaced.
I had agreed to save the computers
during the transition stage and then
remove the very expensive AutoCAD and
Microsoft Office software together with
all data including mails and letters.
This was often done over a network and
the machines just remained plugged in
and I used the various hard drives for
storing my Amiga stuff.

I know I could dump most of them, but
having looked after them for so long
now I just don't have the heart. So if
that makes me a nutter then so be it.

Like I care. Happy days.
