Amiga Book - Becoming an Amiga Artist.
I recently acquired this book called Becoming an Amiga Artist. It
dates from 1987 and from the text I assume was written when there
was only one Amiga, The Amiga 1000. Fresh on the heels of the Andy
Warhol presentation at the Amiga launch it discusses in detail the
use of the Amiga as a creative tool.
I particularly liked the way this book focussed in on the computer
benefits of using the Amiga as a creative tool. ' Becoming and
Amiga Artist explains the use of digitizers, genlock devices, and
MIDI interfaces. It tells how to transfer images from the screen
to paper, film and videotape'.
From my perspective as someone that has spent a lifetime creatively
using pen, brush and paper I never confused the raw creative talent
of my hands with the crude paint tools of the computer. However I
discovered very early on the joy of digitizing and manipulation of
imagery imported to the computer to create works of art. There was
no way I could reproduce so accurately captured images and then
manipulate so easily and speedily. For me the computer was always
a tool that played to its own advantages and not one that tried to
mimic anything I could already achieve with pencil, brush and paper.
Given the age of this book I was most impressed the way the authors
had grasped the computer for what it was and explained the true
benefits of the then Amiga 1000 in working its magic to create truly
unique works of art.
I wasn't so impressed with the art gallery of colour images, given
that these didn't really sell the point for me of using a computer
to create art work. Not sure why they needed to provide them. It
may have proven more in keeping to provide a disk with each book
showing some clever digitizing of an image.
Written by Vahe Guzelimian, Norbert K Kuhnert and Gia L Rozelss
and benefitting from the 'Library of Congress Catalogue-in-
Publication Data' which sounds even more interesting. Seems that
Vahe was the artist and the other two technical bods.
