Amiga 1000 - Time to open the box

Another one of my gems from the vaults of Colin who contributed
this computer to the collection. As ever complete with useful
note as to what was inside. A relatively straightforward computer
in a blue red Commodore box. The keyboard is not included though
may have been boxed separately. There doesn't seem to be a slot
on the polystyrene for mouse, keyboard or disks. Time was that
Commodore packaged everything up in separate boxes. Not sure.

The computer works and boots from the Kickstart disk. There is
a problem however reading disks which I think is a switching
issue reading the disks. I guess I need to look into that.

If you ever need to take one of these apart, a word of caution
regarding the casing. Whilst the Amiga 1000 is a Commodore
product I sense it is more of an Amiga product and lacks the
buildability of the Commodore range. It is not a sturdy case
and the shielding is particularly clumsy. The case plastic
is way too thin and the clipping together is not suitable for
what is a desktop computer. The problems start with the vast
amount of screws they put in the back shielding which catches
on the port screws as you try to lower the metal down. The
front screws are a pig cus they will fall out and get lost
under the motherboard and front expansion.

One trick to getting those pesky screws back into the holes
is to use a big dab of Vaseline on the end of your screwdriver.
I have magnetic ends on my flat ended screwdriver but it would
not attract the screw... no way. Also, that shielding needs
to be totally flat when fitted or the plastic case will buckle
and lift and not close properly.

One last thing in taking the computer apart. I see so often
on YouTube folk taking computers apart and just leave the
screws on the table. Trouble is they are likely to get lost
and worse run under the casing and scratch the computer. So
first I would suggest always working on bubble wrap when
placing face-work onto the bench and second to put your screws
into plastic dishes for safe keeping.

Twas a bad morning for me because as I lowered the tripod to
take a close up of the floppy drive I caught the end of the
camera lens on the edge of the expansion and literally ripped
the thing clean off.. the end I mean. Took out the closing
flap, all the mechanism and small springs to close the lens
and retract into the camera. The thing looks like a Borg now.
Still just about works but definitely busted. Ar hum.. happens.

And so the Amiga 1000 was working which was good to know and
all its bits were intact. Safely back in store now.

I first had to retrieve the Amiga 1000
from the store room.

Colin's note about the Amiga

Busy room this and I already have
two Amiga 1000s set up in here

The other is associated with the 1060
amongst other things

I have two others in boxes and two
more on shelves. The other 1000 box
I have is empty for some reason

Bit tricky getting around but can be done

No time now for playing games... Focus

OK to the bench and seriously you all
should know the Amiga 1000 inside and out

Sticky tape holding the expansion cover on

More tape

Good old Colin. Has stuck the broken
tab to the inside of the cover

Screws deep in their holes and
they often stick in there and its
a struggle to get them out

Pause for thought

Annoying little edge clips that break off

Protect the face-work and use dishes

Shielding screws can be problematic

Kinda typical albeit with the riser board

Checking over the floppy drive

Disaster as a I take the end of the
camera off. Total cock up... Happens

Machine boots from the Kickstart
Remember that the Amiga 1000 has a
special boot disk prior to the
actual Workbench disk.

And so the Amiga 1000 is working. There
is some dispute as to whether the Amiga
1000 was ever known as an A1000. It is
more that it became an A1000 as the other
computers were developed. For me the Amiga
1000 represents a quite distinctly different
machine than the later models as the others
have the characteristics of Commodore. For
me I am more of a Commodore kinda guy and I
view the Amiga 1000 as a one off. Not a great
fan to be truthful. But a great thing to have
