Entry 22nd May 2019: Post 02: Amiga : Making Music

Amiga : Making Music

Reflecting on those Amiga Format magazines I recall the real joy
cover disks provided. Not only were they an introduction to some
seriously wonderful software but also opened your eyes to activities
on the Amiga that you may otherwise have neglected.

For me the area of music was the biggest eye opener. Sampling and
mixing sound to create music was something that was beyond my
capability previous to trying it out on the Amiga. The cover disks
opened the way to literally many many hours of truly magical fun.
I don't think there was one that I didn't explore to the fullest.

Having a musical keyboard on the Amiga that could be customised
to produce any sound and then composed within musical tracks was
incredible to me. Further, the Amiga went on to unfold in many
other avenues of creative joy when mixed with animation and
images. The whole processes of sampling, editing , composing
and then mixing with art work and animations was intoxicating.
I was able to bring into the Amiga everything but the kitchen
sink to manipulate and conjure creative works. The possibilities
were limitless.

I recall the night I sampled Ghostbusters lines and edited them
into a musical track. Man was that fun. It's hard to put the
processes into context now given that so much is possible with
modern computers. But in the day the ease at which you could
bring images, video and music together on the Amiga was quite
stunningly magical.

And so in the day these little gems given out freely with the
magazines were true gifts that allowed for so much enjoyment.
I don't think that in my life I have been gifted with so much
opportunity to really enjoy myself. In today's mobile phone and
social media society I do sense we have lost the desire to be
creative in a meaningful way. I also sense that we have seen
so much in terms of what computers can do, the efforts to create
with such programs probably seems a little pointless.

I guess you had to be there. I certainly am very grateful.

Amiga : Making Music

I read so much in various forums of Amiga
users asking just what they can do with
their newly acquired Amigas. In truth
you need look no further than some of
the cover disks and magazines of the day.
