ScuzzBlog: Diaries April 2026

Entry 5th April 2026: Post 1: Mac G4 - Battery scare and racing the Mega Midget.

Mac G4 - Battery scare and racing the Mega Midget.

I hadn't intended opening up the Mac G4 today but having recovered
my scuzzblog for 25th March 2007 regarding the Mega Midget Racer I
noted that the Mac had a battery. Bugga!

Someone was talking about the mighty CSA Computer Systems Associates
and their range of products for the A500 and I got to thinking how
long has it been since I acquired my Mega Midget Racer for the 500.
The answer being March 2007. In perusing the magic that is an Amiga
accelerator for the Amiga 500 ( yummay ) I couldn't help but note
that the bloody Mac G4 has a battery.

My mind went back to January 2015 when I had a security problem with
a site I was using on the Windows 7 machine. Norton was advising me
to stay clear. Not to be out done I decided to fire up the G4 and
use the machine as a sacrificial computer and visit the dodgy website.
Turned out to be just an out of date certificate. And that was the
very last time I used the Mac. Sadly I found the thing too slow and
a touch archaic being an Apple Mac thingy and all that. She was then
placed in Cryostasis under the table here and is treated to the odd
kick when I am feeling particularly vexed. Helps.

Anyhoo back to that battery thang. Been eleven years so my concerns
were drawn to the battery on the Mac and its status. I wouldn't want
it blowing up and damaging one of my Amigas or Windows machines. As
annoying as it was I lent down, pulled the side lever and dropped
the access panel. I took out the Canon G7 and with a task light took
a series of pics without the tripod of the inner workings of the Mac.
Seriously about as interesting as watching clothes dry. I then took
the pics into Thumbs and having assessed the risk decided the battery
looked OK for now. I closed up and decided I would have another look
in 2037 or never. Probably never.

Trouble with the Mac is that it is made by Apple. I am sure I read
somewhere that without the battery it will refuse to boot. The Mac
had probably died from capacitor burn anyway, so doesn't really
matter that much. Obviously if the battery had started to degrade
badly I would have taken it out. But I'd already wasted a good half
an hour on this and I really wanted to make a cup of tea. So I've
closed that down.

Moving onto the Mega Midget Racer I do wish I had the guts to use
this accelerator. Dunno why but of late I have been looking at
buying another A500 or Plus just for the hell of it. The thrill
of powering up and doing some coding.... gives me a cold shiver.
I must be strong... Classic bit of kit the Racer. You don't find
many internal accelerators for the Amiga 500 these days.

That was that then. Bit annoyed about that Mac thing. I had planned
a marathon League of Legends session watching The Goat take on the
Worlds with T1. Never mind I'll give the thing a good kick. Makes
me feel better. I'm not a fan of Apple or the Mac. Thems crap. But
that's just my view. I'm sure someone likes them.
