Entry 16th August 2019: Post 01: Sensible Golf - Not so Sensible.

Sensible Golf - Not so Sensible.

November 94 and we were promised a new game from Sensible Software.

And so I waited.. and waited, into the new year.

What I needed in 1995 was a boost to my Amiga passion. I was working
for a company that used Windows 3.1, had upgraded to Pentium 90s
and was going through the process of adding CD-ROMs to all the
machines. The buzz in the office was Windows 95 and everyone was
just so keen to get on the internet with faster graphics and even
faster CDs.

For me as I returned lunchtimes with my copy of Amiga Format it was
all I could do to joy at the thought of a new game. Escom may have
just been around the corner and a promise of new gear but for now
there were no Amiga computers for sale in the mags. So much so
that earlier that year I bought a second hand Amiga 1200 for £200.

And so when Sensible announced a new game to their portfolio I
just couldn't wait. Sadly the wait was tainted with a kinda glum
realisation that the game wasn't going to save the Amiga. Worse was
I struggled dreadfully to get the cover disk to work. Amiga Format
admitted to the bugs but sadly I was just left feeling a little let
down.

The game was forever it seemed in the pipeline. Amiga Format released
a revised and updated demo. And eventually I bought the game. So
why the sad face. Well , having played Sensi to death and Cannon
Fodder, this game didn't feel like a game that the guys at Sensible
had really put their heart and soul into. Sure there was the usual
joky state to the game, but it played so dull. Not what I needed
when confronted each day with an office full of optimism over the
new Windows operating system.

Life for me at the time in terms of the computer did start to grate
on me. I so needed new hardware and new gadgets and new games. Mostly
though I needed a brave new future for the Amiga. It was obvious
that games developers were jumping ship. It was obvious that serious
software developers were moving to pastures new. The magazines got
thinner and then disappeared all together, and it really wasn't
the most wonderful of feelings. It wasn't for not trying, as I
continued to buy stuff and scour the games markets to buy new and
interesting titles.

And so for me Sensible Golf kinda reflected the state of the Amiga
world for me in the day. I'm not blaming Sensible Software, they
always tried their best. But this game was just not the Sensible
that I had grown to love. But then neither was the platform.

Anyway.... nuff of the glum. Now for the pics. I pulled an Amiga
1200 that used a hard drive that I rescued from the depths of
the freezer, if you recall. I froze the thing to try and get it
working again, and I was successful. I had some concerns about
the Amiga which I will share with you tomorrow. But for now here
is Sensi Golf and those mags and bugged demo disks plus the games
box and artwork plus manual.

Not a bad game. But then it wasn't brilliant. Ar hum !
