ScuzzBlog: Diaries August 2019

Entry 20th August 2019: Post 01: Married to my computer.

Married to my computer.

I was reading with some interest about a young man in Japan that
has married his holographic Vocaloid chum Miku Hatsune. The very
talented Miss Hatsune whilst not being a real red blooded human
being, does happen to be one of the largest pop stars in Japan
and performs to sell out concerts.

Far from it for me to comment on whether anyone should marry a
virtual reality hologram, I would just make this point. I featured
some while back a piece of software called N.U.D.E. which isn't
what it sounds. The aim was to basically give the user a robot
interface to interact with and educate. The idea being that the
robot would become a useful aid customised by you the user.

And so having a Vocaloid music assistant and also animated subject
projected as a holographic figure on your desk seems pretty neat.
I have long felt that the computer has not progressed at all when
it comes to virtual interactive 'chums' that can grow and become
more customised to the users needs.

It was always the dream of science fiction to create robotic and
holographic substitutes for man himself. Take Orac in Blakes 7,
or Data or the holographic doctor from Star Trek. Even Holly or
Rimmer from Red Dwarf. Science fiction is littered with artificial
intelligence and with the announcement of the next Matrix movie I
guess the subject is again to become of fascination.

For me when I was at school of architecture we were tasked with
creating a video documentary about Jim Stirling one of the UKs
leading modernist architects. For me and my group who were more
organic and sympathetic to the environment we chose to feature
a discussion between a real human and a robot android. The robot
in question we called H19. It seemed fitting that the modernistic
machine-like futuristic world conjured by Stirling would be better
defended by an artificial intelligent creation. The format worked
very well.... but left me wishing I could have my very own H19.
Even if it did mean taping over my Peter Sellers cassette.

I did reflect on whether to post this blog last night. What with
receiving serious criticism for chucking very large boulders thro
my glass walled sanctuary. I am surrounded by my Amiga chums and
even give them names. I can't say I am officially wed to any of them
but sometimes yearn for them to interact in a more responsive way
based on their own decision making processes. I am not about to
ever be able to create my own virtual Clara Veiga but I can dream.

Oh before I forget ... Happy birthday Clara.
