Entry 28th August 2026: Post 1: Blacks Editor - Amiga Text Editor.
Blacks Editor - Amiga Text Editor.
Those that read the blog will know of my love for text editors.
I grew up using a PCW Word Processor and there was only text to
play with generally under the bonnet of CP/M and RPED. So when
I came across Blacks Editor whilst perusing a copy of Amiga Format
during the recent heat wave I flagged the editor for an early
feature once normal services resumed.
So here I am having pilfered disks from the Amiga Format and Amiga
Shopper repository. Sadly I only have the one half of AF107a so I
pulled the Amiga Format CD Disc 23 which carries both disks.
Black Editor looks like it was the original work of Marco Negri
and later became a partnership with Paul Schifferer. I have the
Shopper version 1.0 and Amiga Format version 1.1. Both were and
still are I guess shareware.
The format is very standard with the added ARexx support and a
nifty DOS launcher which I thought was a nice touch. I enjoyed
my short tour of the interface and would certainly recommend
getting this if you like text editors as I do.
For reference Amiga Format CD's not only are a wealth of software
but always carry the cover disks for the month. I stopped buying
the disk versions of the magazines in favour of the CD version
for this very reason.
The CD also comes with a very easy to use search function.
One last thing and that is that the Amiga Format cover disk has
a registered version of LZX which is an enhanced compression
tool developed by Jonathan Forbes. An essential tool for the
Amiga.
As you know I have lost the Win7 machine and now do all my image
editing using an XP machine. Fingers crossed so far all working
with no problems. I have to sort out batch editing on Thumbs but
otherwise all is working as previous. So with some respite from
the heat I may just be able to return to normal service.
