Entry 5th December 2018: Post 01: Amiga 500+ - Shield at the ready

Amiga 500+ - Shield at the ready

Have been meaning to deal with this little problem for some time.
When I set up one of the A-500Plus machines with the A590 external
hard drive I failed to attach the small metal 'ground' that should
sit below the side expansion slot connector. The A590 manual sets
out the reasoning for the ground. I have been getting quite a few
boot failures on this drive and have had to wiggle the unit to get
a positive connection. And so I went on the search for the ground.

Took me a while but I eventually found the ground. I have a feeling
it is for the GVP but my guess is that they work the same.

The ground slides between the shielding and the plastic liner that
sits between the motherboard and the base shielding. I wanted to make
absolutely sure that I didn't snag anything inside so I decided to
split the computer and view the internal arrangement as I inserted
the ground. I really didn't need to bother as the ground slid in
with no issue. It was a bit loose and so while I connected the A590
I taped the metal ground in place. I then removed the tape once
the sidecar had connected with the computer.

All worked extremely well and since it has been installed the A-500
Plus has booted every time. The computer sits in the small room that
I use for storing all my disks. The only other computer in here is
the A1200 tower, though under the table are quite a few CD-TVs. I
took the opportunity while moving things around to get into the
store cupboard to the side which will be the subject of another blog.

And so the ground works and the A-500Plus is running fine. The A590
doesn't have a switch so I am having to pull the plug from the socket
when done. I do have these units with a switch. Once on they only
fire up when the Amiga is running. Makes quite a racket I can tell
you. Sounds like an aeroplane taking off. Great little unit though.

OK that was entry number one. I photographed 32 sessions of items so
I have more than enough already to take us into next year. I also
have any number if items I can be mucking around with. My days are
generally play and record on computers during the day. Edit and
update the website in the evening. That's if I'm not gaming.

Happy days.
