Tomb Raider - Silk purse sows ear.
You may be familiar with a few proverbs/sayings like 'you cant
make a silk purse out of a sows ear', 'put lipstick on the pig',
'polish the turd', 'sugar the pill'. They all amount to the same
thing and that means you can't fool folk into something it ain't.
You can try but you will fail.
It was bad enough when Crystal Dynamics stuck a knife through the
original Lara Croft and created a 'reanimated' character and
tried to pass it off as Lara Croft. I am being deliberately
insulting for a reason. I never once accepted the CD version of
Lara as anything remotely to do with the original. Having played
the game from the beginning I became firmly a Lara addict and it
was a shock to me after Underworld to witness the desecration of
this great icon.
I kinda moved on and simply excepted all that was to come as a
different game with a different main character.
Sadly the latest twist has really wound me up. At the Game Awards
Crystal Dynamics and Flying WildDog announced two new editions of
the game. The first which is Catalyst , a new edition following on
from their rebranding of the game and the second which in my view
is an insult to the great name of the original Lara Croft. This
game named 'Legacy of Atlantis' is a supposed re-imagining of the
original first game using Real Engine 5. The problem is that they
have used their current character as the re-imagined Lara. I show
no images of the character cus she to me is not Lara. They have
even created two versions of the character, for what ever reason,
both having those masculine overtones like the previous though now
sporting Lara's iconic outfit from the first game. Personally,
from a critical viewpoint, her torso is too long and it looks
like they stuffed two paper bags up her top to give her a chest.
Enough.
I will let others decide their likes or dislikes of the current
character but for me it fails on so many levels compared to what
I believe was the very best Lara, and that being the version in
Underworld. I have long given up on this current developer ever
giving Lara the respect she deserves. So for now I live in the
world of Nier and Stellar Blade and look forward to the newly
announced second game in the Stellar series, confident that the
truly magical developers ShiftUp would never desecrate the very
wonderful 'Eve'.
And so much like Final Fantasy VII The Rebirth I will avoid the
disappointment. One day some brave heart will kick these guys
and bring back the heart and soul of this iconic character. For
now the game fails to respect that legacy.
