Entry 22nd December 2025: Post 1: The Amiga Style - The stuff I miss.
The Amiga Style - The stuff I miss.
Time was I got truly excited by peripherals and the like for my
computer. There really was no end to the various 'stuff' you could
buy to make your physical desktop more interesting. In truth the
guys at Commodore were very good at creating peripherals to sit
with your beloved A500 say. None more so than the very elegantly
styled Amiga 1011.
The classic lines of the A1011 compliment perfectly the style of
say the Amiga 500. It would have been so easy to ship out one of
those simple box units so common for the period, But no, Commodore
made a positive decision to make their external floppy a stylish
and most complimentary unit. The same drive was used for the CDTV
albeit in the black.
There is something quite special about the Commodore later C128
era and I think the designers there had serious influence on what
was going on in both camps of Commodore and the Amiga. It would
be truly interesting to see just what may have evolved had the
Commodore company survived. We certainly would have been graced
with some magical kit to adorn our physical desktops rather than
the dull stuff we have to put up with today.
I have been tidying up the main room up here and I came across
the A1011 sitting atop an A500 and couldn't help but appreciate
what a wonderful peace of Commodore kit it was. Unlike the HP
junk that arrived a couple of weeks ago. What I would give to
venture back in time and pay a visit to my old computer store
back in 1990. A truly magical Aladdin's cave type experience that
left you gasping for more.
I actually blame Steve Jobs. Trust me.. less doesn't mean more.
But then I like 'stuff'. Especially the stuff they don't make
any more.
