Hitchhikers Guide - Your very own Nerdvana.
Comes to something when its easier for me to acquire another copy
of Hitchhikers rather than go digging through the collection to
find my original. It really has become that much of a challenge.
Having such a vast personal Nerdvana can be troublesome.
So am I a nerd ? Are you a nerd ? I have no idea. Thing is I was
a nerd long before the name was ever mainstream. So what makes a
nerd be a nerd ? For me that is a simple question to answer. I
rely on my inner self to keep me company. Growing up in a very
large family meant if I wanted escape I needed to interact with
my inner self. So I was taken to drawing, writing, building stuff,
but mostly using my imagination. Consequently I was forever thinking,
it never really stopped.
I was always fascinated with the concept of sideways thinking. In
simple terms that means always looking at things in a completely
different way. I have always believed in going through the doors
that result in the longest journey, cus its the journey that is
rewarding not the arriving at your goal.
Consequently I have always been more comfortable being alone. I
enjoy the escape of pressure having to deal with people. At school
and college I naturally excelled and was always pretty much top
of the class. None of it was hard to me cus I enjoyed it. Being
immersed in any subject makes the process enjoyable. An example
was the English oral exam where I had to talk to the class. For
this I embarked on a self learning process of how to develop
my own black and white photographs. I literally developed my own
photographs so when talking about the process it was easy cus I
could explain from my own experience.
So are you a nerd ? I sense that Douglas N Adams author of The
Hitchhikers Guide is a thoroughbred nerd. The book is an essay
on the contents of his very own Nerdvana. I sense he was drawing
from his own private inner self experiences and enjoying sharing
with the world. Sharing does not come easy in truth cus being a
solitary person you always fear the rejection. The joy is the
satisfaction it gives to others and like my English oral exam I
guess Douglas Adams took heart from the success of the book.
In truth I have no idea whether Douglas was a nerd but I always
giggle to myself when Steve Wozniak refers to Sheldon Cooper as
nerd. When in reality there is no doubt in my mind just who the
real nerd was there. In the world of computers we really need all
the nerds we can find to keep unlocking those doors and enduring
the longer journey so we can uncover more hidden secrets.
You can't ever label yourself as a nerd. Either you are or you
are not. It doesn't stop you from creating your own personal
Nerdvana and if you are minded I would suggest getting hold of a
copy of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy would be a good
place to start. Unless sadly you discover that scuzz just bought
the very last copy on the planet.
