Entry 3rd February 2026: Post 1: Amiga Computing - Missile Command & Asteroids.
Amiga Computing - Missile Command & Asteroids.
The notion of playing computer games in the home never featured on
my radar growing up. Neither I nor any of my mates ever gave
any thought to owning a computer. It was the stuff of Sci Fi. We
certainly played arcade machines and I recall when the arcade game
Space Invaders was introduced to the bar I drank in. They even had
the things set into tables. The games became quite advanced later
on with the invaders taking on three dimensional form almost and
flying out in waves as you tried to shoot them down.
I do recall a friend of mine having the 80s handheld game Astro Wars.
This was the closest thing we had to an actual computer gaming
machine in the home. Sadly my parents could not afford to buy one
so I just drooled over the fun time my friend had with his. I was
pretty sure there were extra games and I do recall playing Asteroids
on one of these things.
And so some of my most earliest experiences of video gaming were of
the games Missile Command and Asteroids... and Space Invaders.
Anyhoo ! I discovered that the August 1991 edition of Amiga Computing
carries a cover disk for both Missile Command and Asteroids for the
Amiga. This version of Missile Command was created by Max Bithead of
Boulder Colorado. He boasts that the game is 100% assembler and just
over 7000 lines. You can read what else he has to say below.
I'm sure Rich Adam and Dave Theurer would have something to say about
the originating game for Atari. Can't say anything is mentioned neither
with this version or the BBC one. How odd.
Sorry, I aint done quite yet with Missile Command. So keep your fingers
ready and poised over those air defenses. There is another wave to come.
PS: If you do see the odd reference to 'Missile Attack' in blogs I do
apologise. I have been back through and corrected the error. Just that
Missile Attack refers to a more recent gaming eperience and given the
limited memory storage I have these days I tend to call up the first
thing that comes to mind. I will say no more other than I am sorry.
