Amiga 500 - More battery perils. Why am I not surprised.
Since I moved the A1200 gaming computer up here to make some space
on the hard drive I have had a vacant workstation in the workshop.
Of late I seem to be spending a lot of time in the box room running
A500 games and software. Seemed like a good idea to have an A500
with ready access to my other machines should I want to copy stuff.
And so I went a venturing into the large room to snag me a suitable
A500 for the job.
First machine that came out when I stuck in my thumb was my fave'
A500 from Christmas of 2015/16. Happy days. I spent a lot of time
decrunching disks on the A4000 and testing them on this machine
whilst I played Settlers and Sensible World of Soccer. She really
was a workhorse and was well worn out by the time I had finished
the exercise.
Great A500 with only one issue and that was she would on very odd
occasions read the floppy in the drive for no reason. Wasn't a
problem. Basically just checked the disk in the drive.
Anyhoo all golden brown from years of usage I snapped a few pics
and pulled open the trap door. Was I not surprised to discover a
RAM expansion complete with clock circuit and barrel battery. The
battery had not gone into meltdown and only took seconds for me
to rock it back and forth before snapping off the board. The thing
then fell on the floor and in the darkness rolled out of sight. I
think I spent more time finding the battery today than anything
else.
I checked over the drive and booted both a more classic 1.3 WB
disk along with an A500/A2000 version. I have to remember that
the A500/2000 disk has been customised to include a lot more
stuff hence the long load time. I include two videos showing the
boot time for respective disks. I'll clean the drive when set up.
Anyhoo she is ready to be installed to the bench opposite to where
she was in 2015/16. I already have a few challenges ready to test
the machine. Should be fun after all these years. To be honest I
had mothballed this machine, kinda retired, as she had seriously
done her tour of duty. No rest for the Amiga.
Onward.
Booting with the two version of the WB disk.
