ScuzzBlog: Diaries February 2026
Entry 20th February 2026: Post 1: Amiga 500 - Amiga Computing Nov 89 in the shadow of the deathstar.
Amiga 500 - Amiga Computing Nov 89 in the shadow of the deathstar.
I'm not taken to making excuses but seriously today really did
take the biscuit. The bench below the A500 I set up yesterday has
my complete collection of Amiga Computing. Imagine my delight
when grabbing the first magazine to find the lovely Elvira on the
cover. I grabbed a fist full of AC cover disks and was hopeful of
demonstrating how you can use the AC disks as a makeshift Workbench.
My first annoyance was the magazine I chose to demonstrate this
little venture did not have the normal Amiga Computing Workbench
screen. Bugga ! What was worse was that on the day I decide to do
this the bloody sun decides to pour into the workshop. 2 months
of dreary dark none stop rain and today just as I want to take
some screen pics the sun shines. It really was impossible to get
any pictures so I carried on regardless and forgot the pics.
I have made a separate guide on which mags from the AC era have
the useful Workbench feature and I will show that tomorrow.
Never mind ...
Anyhoo with Elvira on the cover of Amiga Computing Nov 89 what
else caught my eye.
First up I had a good play with the cover disks. Always a nice
mix of stuff to do with Amiga Computing. CaveRunner is a classic.
There was quite a long article on the Personal Computer Show at
which Commodore had a large stand. It went on to discuss the
merits of the Amiga 500 and various bundles on offer. It also
discussed just what makes an Amiga and options for hard drive
storage.
The games are generally a little obscure albeit presented by the
very adorable Elvira. Always titles I have never played so worth
making a note for future acquisition.
Protext made a showing with a couple of adverts. Seriously one of
the best series of software for the Amiga. Have been with Arnor
since my days on the Amstrad.
The letters and help pages are always informative and I often find
myself making notes as I peruse the responses.
And finally the endless stream of PD listings which kinda is a
bit sad given the unlikely chance of ever getting those titles
again. Ar hum....
I did snap a couple of pics before the sun became too oppressive.
Can't believe that became such an issue today. I was hoping to
set aside a couple of fresh disks to build a special Workbench set
for the A500 in its new location. I prefer to have a customised
Workbench disk so I don't have to do too much disk swapping. I
am toying with the idea of attaching a spare A590 that I have.
For now I will stay Commando and work from the floppy.
Not exactly the day I had planned, but hey, I still managed to
have fun albeit under the gaze of the deathstar. I have spent a
good period taking pics on the bench today and that is what I
now need to focus on. I am also reminded that Midnight is about
to break on Warcraft and that always writes off a week of my time.
All good fun. The A500 is now cooling down. I had to create a
makeshift dustcover so she doesn't go any more brown than she
already is. Incredible.
As ever I leave each to their own on how you track down copies of
the featured magazine. Plenty of online sources plus auction
sites. I simple give you a taste, if you are a true collector you
should already have the disks and mags anyway.
