Amiga 600 - If it's not one thing...
There is a lovely line in Stellar Blade when Eve has narrowly
escaped death yet again and comments that ' If it's not one thing
then it's another'. Kinda out of character the way she says it but
reflects my feelings sometimes.
When you own a massive collection of old kit as I do you have to
expect problems. I gotta say having used so much electrical kit in
my time the one thing I never anticipated was that stuff was going
to last forever. I kinda had a five year tops for most kit. When
the Microvitec first broke on the Amiga 1200 I just simply had it
repaired. It was no biggy and I was not surprised.
Today I live in fear of things breaking, especially on my more
treasured computers. The Amiga 600 I show here is one of my most
favorite machines and she sits pride of place behind me here.
Whilst she is not connected to a monitor I fired her up regularly
to make sure the hard drive kept working. Sadly last summer after
all these years the drive finally 'finally' died. Kinda sad. I
had made a copy of the contents and plan a replacement this year.
The process of getting the drive working often involved lifting
the case cover and gently inverting the drive. In repeating this
process I think I must have disturbed the ribbon cable, maybe
even damaged it. The test kit results show most of the function
keys not working and a couple of others. Worst case scenario I
replace the membrane.
Anyhoo.. I'm gonna put this test kit away. It gives me the creeps.
In the end I'm more than capable of identifying a problem on a
computer without the kit...
PS I had to blame something. I mean how could it be me. Even though
it was. We all make mistakes. Let's move on.
