Meeting Pearls - The sanctity of the physical media.
Meeting Pearls is a great way to describe the disk swapping and
presentations that took place at Amiga 'meets'. How better to
explain the process than quote from a Meeting Pearls CD.
Traditionally rather large groups of Amiga programmers meet
one to three times a year (rising tendency) to exchange
experiences and programs, to test new hardware (networks), etc.
Mostly there are 70..100 freaks attending such a meeting,
spending two or three days together, and crashing somewhere on
the floor in sleeping bags if the eyes fail their duty. Since
about one year each time a network is built from lots or Amigas,
mostly based on Commodores networking software "Envoy".
The net effect of these meetings is contained on the Meeting
Pearls CD.
The Amiga community in the day must have been one of the most
active creators and distributors of physical media in the form
of PD disks/discs. I touched on the other day the work of Team 17
and it should be noted that Michael Robinson , co-founder, had
created 17-Bit Software as part of Microbyte in 1987. His aim was
to discover and encourage young video games developers. If you
are familiar with 17-Bit you will be aware of their PD library
and their excellent series of CD compilations.
It really is incredible how the Amiga community relied on its
distribution systems for getting the word out. The sanctity of
the media was never more important than in those days. Physical
'one on one' meetings and the use of traditional snail mail was
all that was keeping the Amiga community alive. Processes which
have all but died in today's internet based world. And yet more
was circulated during that time than does to this day.
Hats off to all those that took the time to create these data
pearls cus without them I wouldn't have anything like the library
of gems to enjoy.
