Entry 26th January 2026: Post 1: Warcraft Midnight - Housing Early Access.
Warcraft Midnight - Housing Early Access.
I know its only been a hop skip and a jump since the last Warcraft
expansion but Blizzard are now under the directorship of Microsoft
and there is big money to be had from expansions, so get snappy.
And so we have the second chapter in the Worldsoul Saga and this
time instead of uncharted territory we return to Quel'thalas to
take on Xal'atath.. again. Its not only bosses that are back again
but we are set to enjoy the reimagined zones of the Eversong.
Yeh, blah blah, just your usual 12 months of go here and kill ten
of this....
Anyhoo as part of the prepatch and early expansion purchase you get
early access to their new feature of the game, player housing. How
could I resist ? I actually have been resisting cus having played
the game since 2008, I have to say its getting a bit long in the
old tooth.
First up with a prepatch we get the customary changes that cause
havoc. And this time around they very kindly deleted all our hard
crafted transmogs and expected us to pay in gold and time to put
them all back. That didn't work. There is a refund of some form. I
really haven't looked into it yet.
More devastating was the scaling up of Battle Pets in the Old Kingdoms.
All these changes inflict a time sink which really these days I just
can't stomach. I try to avoid Warcraft as much as I can. Anyhoo
I'm still trying to get my head round that one.
On to the housing and man did this turn out to be dreadful. Remember
that I was building games housing as far back as 2014, and even
then it was way better than Wow's offering.
Where do I start. First up the housing area is instanced so no
links with the greater world other than by magic. Next up the
bloody houses are instanced, so its like going into a Tardis. So
disappointed , there is no relationship between inside and out.
The setting is wonderful, but there is nobody, I mean nobody around
and so the environment is lifeless. No sense of community. There
are tools to make mods to the grounds but like everything in this
game you have to spend time earning the stuff. Endless time. On the
inside its an ever growing room by room arrangement, and I have seen
some mad bonkers internals involving additional floors and rooms.
You can do what you like as long as you have the time to get the
stuff to do it.
And here is the rub you need to earn your endeavors and that looks
like you need to team up with folk and spend much time doing quests.
And all for what... To fill a make believe house with stuff. I'm a
bit of an expert of filling houses with stuff so I'm not about to
embark on a fantasy one.
Sadly I chose to bag all my stuff and close the house down and
forget it. I have to. If the environments offered real design
options, like say the Dimensions in Rift I may have given it a
shot. But having to earn every breadcrumb to get an oil lamp just
ain't my thing at the mo. I will dabble in the expansion. I have to,
just to keep my Council of Bloodelf Ladies happy and my second home
is Orgrimmar. For the Horde and all that.
My advice to anyone wanting to play Warcraft is by all means do so
but be sure not to forfeit your real life and friends by doing so.
The guys at Blizzard are well skilled in draining all your time.
