Blade Runner - Los Angeles 2019.
Few films would I class as a perfect works of art, but Blade Runner
I believe is high on the list as a contender. Although the film
states that the events took place in 2020, the actual screenplay
gives the date as Los Angeles November 2019. Odd to think that the
date is this very year. Shame really I was looking forward to my
meeting Rachael.
In truth the film is just a a love story. An odd one, but a love
story all the same. It also highlights the issue of whether those
responsible for giving life should ever be the judge, jury and
executioner when deciding whether their creations should live or
die. Man's destruction of anything has always been born out of
fear that it may dominate.
Anyway, the imagery, music and moody atmospheric story just work
so well to conjure the perfect stage for what is a brilliant sci-fi
film. I love it to death. So much so that I went out and bought the
screen play back in the days of its release. And the book is pretty
true to the events of the film. In truth art is something that
whilst being a defined fixed entity, proves its true value in the
way it is interpreted. Truly great works of art wash across the
mind and stimulate emotion resulting in a personal interpretation
of purpose and meaning. Blade Runner does that and those that
know the work probably have a very different take on its message.
The book achieves much the same and I can often stare long and
hard into any page and see more than is literally shown. That is
the power of the imagination... and for most we are always looking
for stimulation of mind and soul.
So Blade Runner for me is a work of art. I also think it has defined
edges that contain its worth. Today's 2019 society is not capable of
creating another Blade Runner. Times have changed. For ever.
So in November I will remember this work and again no doubt slot in
the video cassette and joy at the world of the Blade Runner.
