Spectrum 48K - Jet Pac ROM on the Interface 2.
When I reflect on my very earliest days of computer gaming and
playing on the Spectrum there are always a couple of gems that
come to mind as classics. Jet Pac was one of them and even now
I really would still have a blast playing the game.
The concept was simple. Assemble your rocket in stages and
avoid the monsters trying to kill you. Then fuel the rocket in
four stages avoiding the monsters and launch into space. Your
character hovers and scrolls from one side to the other whilst
you zap the various creatures. If you scroll off screen you will
appear entering on the other side. It really is as simple as that.
The game dates from 1983 from Ultimate Play the Game. I recall
when I first played the game finding it instantly addictive. The
small group of designers soon expanded their operations into a
very productive company out of Ashby de la Zouch. Their distinctive
label became one that I instantly was drawn to.
Interestingly there were only around eleven games ported to the
Interface 2 ROM slot. I have around three I believe. The game is
instantly loaded via the ROM so no annoying cassette loading. Be
aware that there was an Interface 1 also which was a different
beast, mainly designed for the ZX Microdrive.
So you see we were pretty advanced back in 83/84 and moving swiftly
to integrated add-ons that supported ROM cartridges, microdrives
and joystick interfaces. And the games were very entertaining in
the day. The game in question also worked on 16K machines. Just
think about that ... 16K. I was playing it from tape on the 48K.
