Entry 25th July 2025: Post 2: CivitAI - AI for all - Unless if you are in the UK.

CivitAI - AI for all - Unless if you are in the UK.

It was with great sadness that I logged into one of my favourite
AI image generators last night to discover as a UK resident I was
blocked from using the site. This is the first time in all my years
of using the internet that I have been specifically blocked just
for being located in the UK.

CIVITAI is a pretty successful AI image generating site that gives
users the freedom to create artwork based around their own preferred
art styles. They have their own code of conduct and moderate and
manage the site effectively. The user base is quite vast and feeds
into other AI generating sites. To understand the training processes
and how the processes interweave with each other you need to research
how AI generation works in the public domain.

Sadly the UK government recently introduced a whole raft of legislation
that has forced a number of changes to AI generation. I am not going
to comment on the actions of governments. I do feel very sorry for
all those in the UK that are now excluded from CIVITAI. As a creator
myself I know just how much effort and energy goes into what you do.
To lose this all under a blanket ban is truly extreme. I will reflect
with sadness on my hours of fun I had with the site.

I am troubled that this is the thin end of the wedge and other sites
may have to close their doors to the UK. Fortunately when one door
closes another opens and the community will shift. That is the
nature of the way things go on the internet. Trouble is the restrictive
measures do harm the very thing it was intending to protect. Cus
instead of users being active in established well managed communities
they will be forced into darker corners of the web where there is less
control.

I have been around the web long enough to know this is a moving target.
I am also very much aware that nothing lasts for ever. I have drives
littered with the histories of favourite sites and their content long
since vanished. But I do sense there is an intrusion here that could
impact on the creative freedoms of those on the internet. Not sure where
this is all going to lead to be honest.

For me I stay very much on the fringes of the web and keep well out of
it. I know the community is getting very vocal about this. Time will
tell. But for me I have already closed the site file down and focus on
other avenues of possibilities. There is always something else.
