Entry 27th July 2025: Post 1: Amiga 1000 - Sorry I missed your birthday.
Amiga 1000 - Sorry I missed your birthday.
Was the birthdate of the Amiga 1000 this month and forty years no
less. Sadly I not only missed the event this month but also back
in 1985. In those days to experience Amigas I had to travel back
to the Midlands and talk to my dad who eventually converted my old
box room into an Amiga shrine. He and my sister were mad on them.
For my part I was heavily involved in the refurbishing a terrace
house me and the girlfriend bought for 27000 quid in Poole. The
place was riddled with woodworm and had no damp protection. So
the floors had to come up and the walls replastered. Took all my
cash.
The days of July 85 were spent working on the house and watching
Live Aid on the small TV. I also had my Spectrum hooked up and
managed to log in a good number of hours playing Cyclone and TTL.
Burning the midnight hour writing my text based adventure game.So
sadly no Amiga celebrations in 1985.
However fast forward ten year to 1995 and I was well into the
Amiga. This room was converted into an Amiga sanctuary and I did
very little else.
At the time I was working for an architectural practice in Fareham
and driving down the motorway each day in my red Talbot Alpine. The
town did have a branch of Escom in the high street so I ventured
into their store most days.
At home the A1200 Desktop Dynamite was set up with the Microvitec
and hooked up to a Panasonic NV-J35B video player and SONY HandyCAM
via the VidiAmiga interface. I had a special clipboard for displaying
images that I scanned in.
Acceleration was provided by the GVP Turbo and I still used the 4MB
PCMCIA memory card. I had upgraded the hard drive a couple of times.
The floppy was the XL High Density from Power. Storage was my biggest
problem in 1995. Later that year I tried to install a 1GB 3.5 inch
drive but failed due to power issues. I also was dead keen on getting
A ZIP drive and a Squirrel. Interestingly I finished up buying a
second Amiga 1200 and using that to store stuff. Bonkers.
Creatively I was mad on DPaint and animation. I would capture stuff
off the video and then muck around with it. Madonna at the Brits
was one of my favourites.
I also combined AMOS with the TechnoSound to play around with sound
bites and animation. I had an external Sharp ghetto blaster and a
heavy pair of Radio Shack speakers all playing through the Amiga.
At times it got pretty 'boppy' in here. Great fun.
Music in the day was your normal mix of dance, pop and off the edge.
Oasis had just hit the scene big time though my favourite was probably
still Radio Head.
Games wise I was still hooked into Settlers and Hired Guns. I did
finally get round to beating the game Beneath a Steel Sky. I would
never play that game cus it needed too much of my valuable disk space.
The magazines were all a buzz with Sensible Golf which turned out
to a rather poor game.
So that was that for July 1995. You have heard all this before.
When I say happy days I really mean it. The hours I have spent on
the Amiga have always been very rewarding. Otherwise I wouldn't
still be talking about it so bloody much.
And so with my hand outstretched with a Spock gesture ' Happy Days '.
If you're not having them then you are doing 'fun all wrong' to
quote Sheldon Cooper.
