ScuzzBlog: Diaries July 2025

Entry 29th July 2025: Post 1: Amiga game - I lost more than three Vikings.

Amiga game - I lost more than three Vikings.

Today is a lesson on why you never break your own rules. First up
I was convinced I had done a blog on The Lost Vikings but was
unable to find a single trace. So sorry if I am repeating myself.
As you know I am a great Warcraft fan and have an active subscription.
What always amazes me about the history of Blizzard is how from
Lost Vikings in 1993 these guys then created Orcs and Humans in
the following year. The latter forming the foundation of Warcraft.

The Lost Vikings was the creation of Silicon & Synapse who later
formed Chaos Studios and then Blizzard Entertainment. Primarily
two guys from university Michael Morhaime and Allen Adhem plus
Frank Pearce.

The Lost Vikings features three Vikings who get zapped up in a
flying spacecraft and then have to escape. In the game the three
Vikings take turns in using their special skills to progress.

That said, I sadly don't have the game. It does come up on Ebay
every now and then but generally the guys want too much for what
is often quite damaged boxes. I do keep looking.

Not to break my rules about using cracked games I decided to
fire up the Cover Disk which I have from The One 100% Amiga from
May 1993. Sadly on the emulator a couple of the main keys were
a bit tricky to remap .. Help and Delete.

I then broke my own rule about using cracked disks. Over the
years I have collected a less than dubious mass of games disks.
I have two copies of the game the first doesn't work and the
second appears to work for the most part. I decided to repair
disk 1 but hit a snag that I think the crackers had implemented
which prevented my from copying one of the data files. It just
kicked me out at the exact same spot without trying to repeat.

I then broke my biggest rule. I downloaded an ADF off the internet.
I then copied the ADF for each disk to a ZIP disk. I was in the
throws of copying over the two files to my A1200 hard drive when
the ZIP for what ever reason decided to lock up and sent a corrupt
signal over to the 1200 and totally screwed up my Work partition.
It refused to validate and wont let me create or delete a file.

I have spent the afternoon with HDToolBox and DiskSalve but sadly
the drive is furked. I need to back it up and format the thing.
I was able to transfer the ADF images to RAM from the ZIP and
create the two disks. The first disk works fine but the second
refused to play ball. I even tried the A500 but no luck.

So the moral I guess is not to mess with Vikings. Won't be doing
that again. The game is fun and I may just get the cartridge for
the SNES. As to Blizzard, well they still make me smile. So I can
forgive them for screwing up my hard drive.

Ar hum!!
