Entry 30th July 2025: Post 1: A1200 Lost Hard Drive - Don't panic.

A1200 Lost Hard Drive - Don't panic.

Technically it was a 250MB partition of a 1GB drive that went AWOL.

Seems like just yesterday that I was simply copying two files from
a ZIP drive and disaster struck leaving my Work partition corrupt.
The ZIP had chosen that moment to reset the heads and fractured
the transfer process.

What to do, what do do? There is never a cat about when you want
to fling something across the room. Calm down. Don't panic.

This is where all your constant annoying backup processes really
come into play. The A1200 in question is used simply to copy ADF files
to a Surf Squirrel. She does very little else. But, she does have
some very useful software on the drive, albeit a little chaotic
in terms of storage. Lots and lots of small file, as only an Amiga
knows how to create.

All my drives have at least one spare partition, sometimes two. On
this machine it was poor Clara that was going to get the boot and
so losing all those art images and videos that I created. I do
have copies so no problem.

Currently the Work partition doesn't validate. I have tried fixing
the drive but that just shunted the checksum a little further
along the disk. The drive refuses to create anything issuing an
error message. So time to copy of the contents to Clara.

All I do here I do with the machine powered on and I only reboot
at the very end to check if it all went well.

01: Check I have a backup of the files on Clara.
02: Delete everything off Clara ( Clara being the second partition ).
03: Have a cuppa tea and curse the sun coming through the window.
04: Copy the contents of the Work partition to Clara.
05: Drink tea ... I needed that.
06: Quick Format 'QUICK' I said, the Work partition.
07: Now copy back the Work files I transferred to Clara.
08: Finish tea whilst watching YouTube.
Note: At no time did I switch the Amiga off or reboot.
09: Complete the process and when done reboot the Amiga.
10: Like magic the drive is retrieved and all is as it was.

If only life was so simple. As you were !!!
