ScuzzBlog: Diaries July 2026

Entry 6th July 2026: Post 1: Elvira - Devious little mistress.

Elvira - Devious little mistress.

Whilst the weather is hot I spend a lot more time with the Amigas
in the Workshop. Today I decided to carry the camera around with
me and whilst the images are a bit blurry they do show what I was
up to.

A few years ago I spent quite a bit of cash trying to get a working
set of the Elvira game. Problem was the disks would arrive and they
had faults. Eventually I was able to create a working set and then
installed it onto the A500 with the GVP.

Going back to the box with this hoard of disks in today I was unable
to reason why I copied the disks as LHA files and then put them on
to high density 1.4MB disks. Didn't make any sense.

First up I attempted to create a set of disks from the busted ones
and was able to with the exception of Disk 1. I could cheat but I
like a challenge. Eventually I succeeded but then noted that the
LHA sets I created last time and compared to this had a different
file size for DISK1.

Nothing for it but to copy to the ZIP disk and transfer over to
the emulator to check the file sizes.

First up though I discovered a Clara Veiga 3n21 Tools disk which
are always packed with stuff that I would have been using on the
day. Normally text editors, archivers and useful Workbench files.
On this disk was a few pics of Clara and I couldn't resist taking
a snap or two.

Note that the Amiga 1200 I use has a Power Computing XL high density
drive so I am able to read HD disks.

The emulator was most revealing cus the LHA file that was reporting
the smaller overall disk actually had more files on it. However the
larger file without the additional disks reported one or two bigger
file sizes. However, both disks when unarchived were exactly the
same size 799K. Problem was that neither disk would fit onto a
standard DD disk. So frustrating. That is why I was using HD disks
to save the disk files cus of the bigger disk capacity.

I am no closer to having a working set of copied disks. I have all
the files and can install to HD however to play the game I would
need to either keep buying the game till I got a working set or
pilfer a copy off the internet by downloading. Sadly that is not
what I am about.

As I concluded the session I realised I had yet again traversed the
wilds of Amiga wonderland tinkering and fiddling and yet as ever
finished up right back where I started. Retro is like that, but if
you enjoy yourself what does it matter. It wasn't like I wanted to
play Elvira. Just a very pleasant thought having the opportunity.

I better go.

PS I'm sure the bright ones amongst you realise this is a copy
protection issue. Just wish I could get round it.

The LHA files I created are different for DISK1.

Left pane smaller file and right pane the larger

I show the files in the left that are not in the
the other file and yet smaller overall.

Simply comparing the file stucture of both LHA files.
